Bridge Mode

What Is Bridge Mode?

Bridge Mode is a built-in feature of a router that enables the router to stop using routing functions and is only responsible for the direct transmission and exchange of data.

Since the process of transferring data in this way is very much like transporting goods from one end of a bridge to the other in the real world, people call this router feature Bridge Mode, which means the ability to turn the router into a "bridge".

Why We Need to Use Bridge Mode?

In daily life, the most common scenario where bridge mode is applicable is when there are multiple routers at the same time.

In the past, ISPs often supplied separate modems and routers, necessitating individual setups. Nowadays, it's common to receive an all-in-one device from your ISP that integrates the modem, router, and Wi-Fi access point into a single compact unit. It simplifies the network connection process, but it's hard to realize that it's actually a combination of multiple devices.

As a result, when a user buys a new router and connects it to this small box to enhance network coverage, both devices operate in routing mode with two private IP addresses and cannot communicate with each other, creating a dual NAT situation. Once double NAT occurs, all other devices may fail to connect to the network.

This is where the bridge mode plays a unique role. Users can set the router in the all-in-one device to bridge mode, so that it can just act as a modem and let the new router take on the role of routing, allowing the entire network to return to normal and complete the upgrade.

How to Set Up a Router to Bridge Mode?

Step 2. Navigate to the website recorded at the bottom of the router.

Step 3. Log in using the username and password found on the router's bottom label.

Step 4. Navigate to Settings > Advanced Settings > Advanced Setup > Wireless Bridge.
