The yearly National Cyber Security Awareness Month (or NCSAM) is coming. Today we will cover you with several simple steps you can take to minimize the online risks.

Launched in 2004 by the Department of Homeland Security and the National Cyber Security Alliance, the NCSAM is designed to help raise public awareness of online safety and to increase resiliency in the event of cyber incident.  With hacks, data breaches, and other cyber-related crime becoming increasingly overwhelming these days, the NCSAM is another important reminder that online safety should be of paramount concern for all individuals and organizations.

“Cyber risks can seem overwhelming in today’s hyper-connected world, but there are steps you can take to protect yourself and reduce your risk. Everyone has to play a role. Use common sense, for example, don’t click on a link from an unsolicited e-mail, and remember that if an online deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. And overall, remain vigilant to keep yourself and your family safe in the online world, just as you do in the physical world.”

Scott Smith, Assistant Director of the FBI’s Cyber Division

To counteract these threats, there are basic and simple 5 steps you can take to minimize the risks associated with doing any kind of business online, surfing the Internet, or sharing information on social media sites.

Firstly, keep your firewall turned on, and make sure your antivirus and antispyware software is the latest version.

Secondly, do not click any link or attachment unknown.

Thirdly, change your passwords often. Use different passwords for online accounts, and make them snot easily guessed.

Fourthly, post as little personal information as possible on the Internet. With more and more personal and organizational information posted on social networking site, these information can no longer be considered private as it should be. Hackers can easily get your personal passwords and information in easiest social media account, and then your banking credentials and credit card numbers etc. So it is good to post as little personal information as possible on the social networks.

Last but not least, use a virtual private network(or VPN) when getting on the Internet, especially when you are using the public hotspot. A VPN enables data encryption and adds a layer of security to communications, making it more difficult for cyber criminals to spy on you. All you have to do is to choose a proper VPN service and tap it on when using the Internet.
