8 ways to protect yourself online

Use end-to-end encrypted apps

End-to-end encryption allows data to remain in ciphertext form during transmission from source to destination. End-to-end encryption prevents messages from being decrypted before they are transmitted to their destination, and messages are protected throughout their transmission.

Viruses and other forms of malware often spread because you click on a link from someone you know. If you receive an unfamiliar-looking link from a friend or family member, pay attention to notice an unusual spelling, or find the link from a channel you have never seen before, please get in touch with them to determine the reliability of the source you received the link from. It's worth taking a moment to confirm the security of the link.

Use a strong password

People still use passwords like "123456" or "date of birth." Don't use your or your family's birthday as a password. Instead, use a strong password to protect yourself from online identity theft. It's best to use a password that you can remember, but that is difficult for others to guess. Instead, use more complex password combinations, including numbers, letters in upper or lower, special symbols, and more.

Alternatively, you can use a password management app to generate and store passwords. Typically, a password manager will generate a unique password for you. Changing your password several times a year is also a good suggestion.

Keep up with updates

Turning on automatic updates of security software, browsers, devices, etc., will fix any security holes that may be detected in your program or device.

Use two-factor login (2FA)

Two-factor authentication provides an extra layer of security for your account, ensuring that you are the one logging into your account. Usually, you only need to enter your username, account number, or account and password to log in immediately. Two-factor verification requires you to provide additional information to verify your identity.

After you log in with your username and password to verify your identity, you will be asked to enter a code (pin code) sent to your phone via text message or email. Or you must answer a security question to pass verification.

Although two-factor authentication will increase your login time, it will reduce the possibility of others logging into your account and better protect the security of your account.

Avoid using public wi-fi

Avoid accessing unsecured public wi-fi on your device. If connecting to an unsecured network is unavoidable, avoid entering content related to leaking personal and financial information on any website.

Read the privacy policy

A website's privacy policy tells you how the website protects the personal information it collects. Although the content is long and complex, focusing on the bolded parts or the words that are individually remarked on is necessary.

Log out completely

After using your online account, closing or minimizing your browser or entering a new web address may not be enough to prevent others from accessing your account information. Instead, click the "Logout" button to terminate your login status and, in addition, confirm that your browser don't "remembers" your username and password information.
